Nuances of Nouveau

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling and Rejuvenating Things

Art Nouveau has often been described as a celebration of the woman in nature.  It is an unmistakable style noted by long flowing lines (often referred to as whiplash lines).  The curvaceous female form with flowing locks of hair was perhaps the most obvious use of these sinewy shapes.

Popular from 1890-1910, Art Nouveau jewelry was predominantly yellow gold featuring multicolored enamel; anything from a subtle pink blush to a bright and bold kaleidoscope explosion of hues.  At first glance, I thought this dazzling cuff was an original antique example.  However, closer inspection revealed that it was actually a revival, a reawakening.

A series of hallmarks sit center stage in a vertical line atop the hinge..  there are seven in all:

D   L   W   R   18K   78   1/1

The 18K is self-explanatory – this beauty is completely constructed from a rich 18 karat yellow gold.  I believe the 78 indicates that the bracelet was made in 1978 while the 1/1 most likely reveals that this remarkable piece is the only one ever made.  I have exhausted myself trying to uncover what those letters might mean…  to no avail.  The most sensible answer is that these represent the artist and perhaps the recipient.

Lustrous cobalt blue enamel covers the entire inside of the cuff while the edges present an irregular scalloped pattern with an underlying peep of gold showing through.  Flanking the hinge are six abstract birds, each with a singular diamond burnished within.  The two bodies stretch out at leisure…  one seeming to bask in the light of the summer sun while the other appears to bathe in silvery moonlight.  Turning the bracelet over reveals my favorite detail, these clasped hands.

Priced at $7,900, this bracelet is unique.  It’s a statement piece, making a bold declaration on the wrist of the wearer.  Joden is known for jewelry of distinction.  Don’t just take my word for it, come see for yourself.

Joe’s Special Box – Volume 101

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling, and A Collector’s Things

February 22, 1732 is George Washington’s birthday.  Perhaps the most recognized politician, he was our first President; he served two terms from 1789-1797.  A prominent military man, Washington is considered by many to be the father of the United States.

Americans began celebrating the life and work of George Washington in 1885, recognizing his birthday as a federal holiday.  Our nations capital is named for him as well as at least three universities.  He appears on Mount Rushmore, the $1 bill and the quarter dollar coin.

In 1971, the celebration was moved to the third Monday of February and became known as President’s Day, allowing us to honor not only George Washington but all the remarkable men who have served our great country.

We are commemorating this momentous day with a stunning Edwardian bracelet.  A conical cabochon sapphire sits center stage in this early 1900’s gem.  The rich blue tone of the stone is accentuated by a rose cut diamond halo that completely surrounds it.  Six natural pearls cascade from the center down each shoulder.  In classic Edwardian style, the bracelet is constructed from an 18 karat yellow gold base with a layer of platinum on top giving it time-honored appeal.

The quality and craftsmanship of this bracelet are superb.  In pristine condition, and priced at $3,250, it’s the perfect accessory for President’s Day.

Tooting Our Own Horn

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling and  Musical Things

Ah, Valentine’s Day… it always evokes images of Cupid, hearts, and all things pink and red.  It’s my favorite holiday – what could be better than a day devoted to love?  From small children to adults, everyone can enjoy Valentine’s Day.  Cards will be exchanged, flowers given, candies devoured…  all in the name of love.

As soon as I laid my eyes on this turn of the century brooch, I knew it was the perfect piece for today.  Made entirely of 18 karat yellow gold, the simplistic yet charming appeal is undeniable.  It’s a horn, but not an ordinary one…  it’s an early form, known as a hunting horn.  This melodious instrument was used to signal every aspect of a hunt, from the Moving Off call (marking the beginning) to the Blowing for Home (indicating the end) and everything in between.

The flared bell of the horn features a series of eight Old European Cut diamonds, each one handset with four prongs.  Totaling approximately .50 carat, these beauties add an element of sparkle to this otherwise spartan horn.  Like its real-life counterpart, the instrument is made from a single piece of tubing wrapped in a coil with a wide bell at the end.  The circular hoop shape lent itself to be easily slung over the shoulder while not in use.

Perhaps you noticed the miniature cherub seated atop the end of the horn?  This Cupid-like figure beams from his post, lounging back with playful abandon.  His golden curls add to his boyish charm, and one tiny diamond winks from within the delicate curve of his wing.  The wings are often thought to symbolize how flighty lovers can be while Cupid’s youthful appearance is believed to demonstrate that love is irrational (just like a young boy).

Priced at $1,650.00, this Art Nouveau beauty is ideal for Valentine’s Day.  This and so much more is available online and in our 144 South Broad Street location.  Not to toot our own horn, but our inventory boasts something for everyone.  You won’t be disappointed.  Visit our showroom and make this gem yours today.
