Georgian pieces are a rare find. Georgian pieces in excellent condition are nearly non-existent. It’s no surprise considering that the Georgian era ended in the 1830’s… most of these uncommon gems are at least two hundred years old.

Jewelry was completely handmade from labor intensive techniques like thin sheets of usable metal made with hand hammered gold ingots. Primitive rose cuts, Old Mine cut diamonds and gemstones were set in silver and gold; feminine floral motifs were all the rage.

These late Georgian earrings resemble a pair of flowers hanging upside down… small red ruby buds are set in simple pinched collets. Twelve rose cut diamonds add a hint of sparkle to the silver leaves on either side of the golden stem. Natural pearls set on an uncomplicated swirl of wire complete the look.

Indigenous to the Bahamas, conch shells are prized not only for their beauty but also versatility. This sea snail is easily recognized by the high spire shell that is pointed at both ends. The inside of this ocean beauty offers a kaleidoscope of pink and orange tones… a strong contrast to the sandy colored exterior. This soft brown tone allows it to blend into the sand flats where it is often found.

The shell itself has superior strength; it has occasionally been used in building materials in place of bricks. The creature inside is a culinary delight, used both raw and cooked – even inspiring cooking competitions dedicated to the most delectable dish. When hollowed out with a hole drilled in one end, the shell makes a trumpet-like instrument that has been used for hundreds of years.

This sweet little ring washed up on the shore of Joden Jewelers recently and we couldn’t be more excited. Made from the rich bright tones of 18 karat yellow gold, this dainty darling consists of a simple high polished band and one conch shell accent. Lustrous multi-hued enamel adds color and dimension to the shell. Pale pink fades to creamy white to bring a lifelike feel to the piece. One small pearl is captured inside the opening for added appeal.

The inside of the band displays three hallmarks… 750 for 18 karat, Cayman and the copyrighted signature mark of Kabana. This legendary company was founded in 1975 and is known all over the world for superior style and exquisite design. Most of their work is done with inlaid gemstones like fine opals and other opaques. I was surprised and delighted to discover their mark inside the ring!
