Past Is Present

Baubles, Bling and Inspired Things

Oscar Wilde once said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.  For centuries, artisans and jewelers have proven the truth in those words.  Inspiration for these craftsman was often found not by envisioning something new but rather by looking into the creations of years gone by.

When I found these earrings, I immediately identified them as Victorian.  All the earmarks were there, beginning with the oval amethyst center stones.  Amethyst was a very popular gemstone in the 1800’s, especially in soft pale lavender shades like this.

Held in place by a seamless circle of twenty claws, these two genuine stones have a combined weight of approximately 6.00 carats.  A tiny golden rope decorates the base of each setting.  The overall look is softened with the addition of a halo of seed pearls.  These natural beauties are carefully strung and secured in place with a singular strand of metal wire.  Simply lovely.

When I flipped one of the earrings over and the crisp “14K” hallmark appeared, I changed my mind.  I knew these were not authentic Victorian earrings from the 1800’s.  Instead, they were made in the 1950’s.  Stamping the 14-karat gold hallmark on jewelry began in 1932, making it impossible for these little charmers to be truly Victorian.  They’re a revival…  a tradition that honors the style and technique of a previous period.  The Victorian era encompassed most of the 19th century and showcased some of the most iconic antique jewelry of all time, it’s easy to understand why jewelers in the 1950’s were compelled to re-create it.

Revival jewelry is often more readily available and in better condition than the antique pieces they’ve been modeled after.  Additionally, age and condition are directly correlated to price…  so a pristine piece of Victorian jewelry could command quite a high price.  Because these revival earrings are only 70 years old and not 170 years old…  they’re quite reasonable.  Priced at just $725.00, they’re a great and affordable alternative to authentic antique earrings.  Call us at 800-747-7552 to make them yours today.

What’s New – Volume 60

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling and the Latest Things

Customers are ALWAYS remarking that they couldn’t possibly work at Joden Jewelers.  They would spend their entire paycheck on jewelry!  Then they look at us and wonder aloud how we are able to do it.  Surely being surrounded by these sparkling gems must be too much temptation to resist.  The answer isn’t quite that simple…

  • We work for a living (and haven’t won the lottery), so spending our ENTIRE check on jewelry wouldn’t be wise.
  • Over time, a sense of “jewelry-blindness” takes over.  Anything ordinary simply doesn’t get noticed.
  • What if I buy this now and something I love even more comes in tomorrow??

Writing blogs and partnering with Dana on all things internet-related (our website, Facebook and Instagram) adds another element to the mix.  We can’t just choose pieces we like, but instead must look at everything through your eyes as well.  Dana and I watch for trends, pieces that are rare and signed goods.  We look for jewelry that’s not only aesthetically appealing but also offers great value.

Lately, I’ve been drawn to yellow gold.  I even told Dana that I cannot write about another platinum diamond ring – but those posts are the ones that get the most response.  We strive to keep our content fresh; and because we specialize in antique jewelry, we do see more Edwardian, Art Deco and Mid-Century modern rings than most jewelry stores.  It’s up to us to pick through and save the very best ones for Joden – even if it doesn’t jive with our latest obsessions!

Reminding me of my own engagement ring, this dainty darling caught my eye.  Made near 1940, it’s a little bit Art Deco and a little bit Mid-Century Modern.  Platinum from top to bottom, it centers on a round diamond weighing approximately .53 carat that is set within fishtail style prongs.  Flanking this diamond are a pair of step-cut trapezoids that total .45 carat and then two straight baguettes that offer an additional .18 carat of sparkle.  If you’re keeping track, that’s 1.16 carats overall.  Mint condition and utterly charming, this beauty is priced at just $2,450.00.  If you love a great vintage piece, hop over to joden.com for additional photos and details.

And so, even though I said I couldn’t possibly write about another platinum diamond ring…  clearly, I was mistaken.  Super sweet and priced to sell, this little ring was too good to pass by.  Every single day Dana and I talk about you guys…  our readers, followers, customers and friends.  We love what we do.  We hope that it shows and that you love it too.  ♥

Lengthy Laurels

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling and Botanical Things

It’s no secret that bodies come in all shapes and sizes…  for that very reason, jewelry also comes in a wide variety of sizes, lengths and widths.  Due to poor nutrition and health conditions, Victorians were small (on average, 65 inches).  Today, the average man is 69 inches tall.  Often, rings from the 19th century are tiny.  Bracelets are also short, commonly measuring less than seven inches.  Unfortunately, it can be challenging to find the perfect fit for those pieces – a Cinderella’s slipper kind of quest!

This Art Nouveau bracelet is a rare find.  Measuring 8.5 inches in length, this 18-karat golden beauty is comprised of eight identical links.  Pairing laurel vines with forget-me-not blossoms, each link is a tiny work of art.  Marquise-shaped, each one features a textured center with two x’s.

The back is just as lovely as the front and highlights the beaded wire swirls that provide structure as well as beauty.

The clasp is hidden, integrated within one of the laurel links and features French hallmarks.  Joining each link together are small ribbed rings.  The condition is superb – showing no signs of wear.  The long length makes this bracelet an ideal choice for many.  It can be worn as is or if a shorter length is needed, a link or two can be removed (an extra link would convert perfectly into a bar-style necklace!).  Moderately priced at $3,500.00, this antique beauty is available on our site.  Check it out now!
