So many things trend… cars, clothes, food, places and even things like patterns and shapes. Dating all the way back to the Neolithic Era is a simple yet classic zigzag figure. Taking the shape of a repeating “V”, the chevron is created by two diagonal stripes meeting at an angle. It appeared on pottery and petrographs, and was believed to symbolize infinity and the eternal flow of life.
When adorning shields and coats of arms, the chevron represented the roofs of houses; it signified security and the meaning of home. Later, during the Renaissance, this symmetrical design became an integral and important part of military badges. In the 18th century, the chevron was incorporated into military uniforms and is still utilized to this day.
By the 1970’s, this symmetrical jagged line represented energy and movement. It took over the design world, decorating textiles that dominated the world of fashion and interior design.
