Pick of the Week – Volume 66

Joden Girl

Baubles and Bling with Unbelievable Pricing

This special edition of our weekly blog postings is reserved for true treasures that have been a part of our collection for an extended period of time.  These old favorites have long been overlooked for one reason or another.  This week’s selection is so lovely, I cannot fathom why we still have it.  In fact, I’m completely mystified.

Albeit sizable, this Edwardian pendant offers ethereal charm from every angle.  Because it was created from platinum, a dense and very ductile precious metal, the artist was able to achieve a light and airy framework.  Platinum, strong and malleable, was the only choice to craft the delicate, lacy patterns that early 20th century jewelry was known for.  Studying the pendant from behind, there is no doubt that the framework was made specifically for a uniquely cut gem.

The overall shape of the pendant resembles a heart (minus the divot at the top) with swirling vines and scintillating sparkle.  Seventy-three rose cut diamonds are sprinkled throughout the filigree frame; combined, these diamonds have a total weight of 1.25 carats.  As I mentioned before, this framework was made with a very specifically-shaped spot in the center…  the hexagonal hole has been set with a deep purple step-cut amethyst.  The color of royalty and weighing approximately 25.00 carats, this gemstone is the crowning glory of this Edwardian pendant.

We have had this beauty for some time, in fact, I blogged about it once before in a post titled “Feeling Fancy Friday“.  We have paired it with a vintage 14-karat white gold chain that measures 24-inches in length.  The chain features an alternating pattern of elongated open links and oval links with scrolled centers.  The pendant could also be worn on a short chain for an evening look.  It’s hard to believe that no one has snagged this antique treasure!  The only objection I can imagine anyone making would be the price.  And so, we’ve decided to remedy that.  Previously available on our site for $5,650.00, we are now offering it for just $4,750.00!  If you’ve had your eye on this old favorite, now is the time to make it yours.  ♥

Baubles, Bling and the Latest Things

Often, in jewelry, what’s old becomes new again.  With each new generation of fashionistas and style-icons, we find inspiration for the future by looking to the past.  Albeit short, the Edwardian era is one of the most imitated and reproduced periods in jewelry.  Lasting from 1901-1910 (marked by the reign of King Edward VII), the Edwardian period celebrated classically feminine, lacy jewelry.

This pendant showcases everything that made early 20th century jewelry desirable.  A 14-karat yellow-gold base is topped with platinum and set with fifty-nine diamonds of both Old Mine and Old European cuts.  These gems offer 2.70 carats of sparkle.  These gems have an average color grade of G and an average clarity grade of VS-SI.  Bright and colorless, these diamonds cover every swirl and whorl of this curvaceous creation.

Nestled deep into the center of the piece and held in place by six yellow gold claws is one creamy natural pearl.  The warm golden tone of this pearl brings a feeling of warmth to the otherwise crisp and colorless necklace.  When shown from behind, it’s clear that this beauty was converted from a brooch.  There are two smooth pads on the left and right sides where the pin stem was once attached.

Although we did not remove the pin stem from this piece, it was definitely done by an expert jeweler.  The craftsmanship is superb and doesn’t detract from the value of the pendant in the least.  Crafted around 1910, this necklace is available for $3,750.00.  Add timeless elegance to your wardrobe with this beauty available now at Joden Jewelers.

Baubles, Bling and the Latest Things

People always say ” the pictures don’t do it justice”.  There’s no doubt, it’s damn hard work to capture the ageless beauty of fine jewelry.  Each piece presents its own challenges, sometimes they can be overcome and sometimes they can’t.  No one at Joden has been more successful at mastering the art of jewelry photography than Dana.  I’ve watched her talent emerge and grow over the last four years.  This week, she nailed it.  I gasped when I saw these gorgeous shots.

In our collaboration, I am the words and she is the music.  Individually, we are both quite good at what we do, but together, we truly sing.  It’s a frustratingly long and yet exhilarating and extremely rewarding process.  In short, we love our job.

This pendant is made from 14-karat yellow gold, as indicated by the hallmark on the back of the bail.  Also etched into the reverse side of the pendant are the words “El Paso” with a date…  1915.  Without this clue, I would have called this pendant Victorian, late 1800’s.  All yellow Edwardian jewelry is rare – a fact that makes me love this pendant all the more.  An elongated triangular shape dangles from an inverse tear-drop, both of which feature dainty Etruscan beadwork and delicate seed pearl accents.  A kite-shaped pink stone sits center stage – this lovely pop of color is not a natural gemstone but rather a imitation one.  It’s authentic and original to the pendant.  Fine filigree details speak to the time period and soften the overall feel of the piece.

This beauty hangs from a vintage 18-karat yellow gold rope chain.  Measuring twenty-inches in length, this chain is perfect for the pendant although it’s probably not original.  Priced at $1,275.00, this pendant is available in the store and on our website.  A beauty like this won’t last long…  and I promise, these photos do indeed do justice to this antique gem.  ♥
