Joe’s Special Box – Volume 152

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling, and A Collector’s Things

Sometimes I have to be sneaky when I’m scouting for blog picks… especially when they’re for the “Joe’s Special Box” blogs!  Joe tends to be a bit territorial when it comes to his private collection.  Much like a hoarder, he has an eye for the very finest treasures and he likes to keep them to himself.  From Victorian to modern, if something a little extra is needed – the place to look is in Joe’s stash.  Every single time Joe catches me digging through those boxes, his voice sharpens a fraction when he asks… “What are you looking for?”  If I tell him that I need blog inspiration, he relaxes a bit but still wants to know which one of his prized pieces has piqued my attention.

This lovely little pendant reminds me of a daisy.  Pretty and petite, the design is unique.  Made from a combination of 18-karat white gold and platinum, the flower itself is centered on a sixteen-inch cable link chain.  Two bezel set round diamonds connect to a pair of pavé-set diamond leaves.  Three diamonds accent each little leaf.  Just below the delicate foliage is the featured flower.  The middle of the blossom is oval in shape and it is also pavé-set.  Ten round brilliant diamonds fill the oval from top to bottom.  Perhaps the most interesting component are the “petals”.  A singular piece of wire has been coiled into a uniform spring that completely encapsulates the diamond center.  Showcasing a matte finish, I love this unusual design element.

There are eighteen diamonds in all with a total weight of approximately .80 carat.  Bright white, these colorless diamonds have an average clarity grade of VS.  The back of the piece is engraved with a series of hallmarks… “Michael B., © 96, plat, 18K”.  Like a key for a map, these hallmarks reveal details about the pendant.  It was made in 1996, from both platinum and 18-karat gold by legendary modern designer Michael B.

Michael began honing his craft at the tender age of ten in Istanbul, Turkey.  By the age of sixteen, he came to California to pursue his dream.  Working primarily in bridal designs, Michael B. went on to win countless awards.  He became known for micro pavé setting, which is showcased to perfection in this pendant.  Although the brand lives on, Michael B. passed away in 2014.  This particularly fine example of his work is available for $2,150.00.  Who wouldn’t want to find this beauty under their Christmas tree?  ♥

Joe’s Special Box – Volume 100

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling, and A Collector’s Things

In honor of the 100th edition of Joe’s Special Box blog, I wanted to share the story of how it all began…

Joe has been at the helm of Joden Jewelers for nearly 5o years.  It has been a never ending quest for the best.  He has painstakingly assembled a seemingly endless supply of the finest antique, estate and modern jewelry.  In the process (as you can imagine) he has uncovered piles of ordinary things…  and more than a few of the extraordinary.

Those exceptional pieces…  the irresistibly sweet little baubles became a personally curated collection.  Over the years, Joe began tucking these special pieces into a box in his desk.  He intended to give them to his daughter one day.  We all knew these treasures weren’t available for sale.  As time went on, the collection grew.  And grew.

It is now not one, not two but three full boxes filled to overflowing.  And so, Joe decided to share his cache of riches.  These are not the most expensive items, they aren’t the biggest diamonds.  These are the most rare, the impossible to find, the true gems of the past fifty years.  Join us each week and see what Joe’s Special Box has to offer.

Joe’s Special Box – Volume 31

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling, and A Collector’s Things

Vintage diamond engagement rings are always in demand at Joden.  One of the things we hear most often is “I don’t want a ring that looks like everyone else’s.”  Our customers crave uniqueness and individuality.  Pieces made during the Edwardian and Art Deco periods offer just that…  quality with distinction, real style.  Often times, these little beauties never make it past Joe’s Special Box.  He scoops them up because he also knows their value and rarity.  It’s becoming more and more difficult to find these rings.

Earlier this week, I found this gem tucked into a tray of new purchases in Joe’s office.  Coincidentally, this is exactly how I stumbled upon my own engagement ring nearly twenty years ago.  It was just laying on a tray in the office…  waiting for me.  After all these years, I love my ring just as much as I did the day I got it.  Here’s my ring and wedding band…  and also another picture of this week’s featured piece.  Alot of similarities there, right?

Made entirely of platinum at the end of the Art Deco period, this sweet little ring caught my eye immediately!  I love the simplistic three-stone appeal of it.  Set with a .66 carat round diamond in the center, and flanked by a pair of single cut diamonds, it’s timeless perfection – priced at $3,500.00.

Just as my ring was waiting for me. this engaging enchantress is at Joden – waiting for you.
