Joe’s Special Box – Volume 152

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling, and A Collector’s Things

Sometimes I have to be sneaky when I’m scouting for blog picks… especially when they’re for the “Joe’s Special Box” blogs!  Joe tends to be a bit territorial when it comes to his private collection.  Much like a hoarder, he has an eye for the very finest treasures and he likes to keep them to himself.  From Victorian to modern, if something a little extra is needed – the place to look is in Joe’s stash.  Every single time Joe catches me digging through those boxes, his voice sharpens a fraction when he asks… “What are you looking for?”  If I tell him that I need blog inspiration, he relaxes a bit but still wants to know which one of his prized pieces has piqued my attention.

This lovely little pendant reminds me of a daisy.  Pretty and petite, the design is unique.  Made from a combination of 18-karat white gold and platinum, the flower itself is centered on a sixteen-inch cable link chain.  Two bezel set round diamonds connect to a pair of pavé-set diamond leaves.  Three diamonds accent each little leaf.  Just below the delicate foliage is the featured flower.  The middle of the blossom is oval in shape and it is also pavé-set.  Ten round brilliant diamonds fill the oval from top to bottom.  Perhaps the most interesting component are the “petals”.  A singular piece of wire has been coiled into a uniform spring that completely encapsulates the diamond center.  Showcasing a matte finish, I love this unusual design element.

There are eighteen diamonds in all with a total weight of approximately .80 carat.  Bright white, these colorless diamonds have an average clarity grade of VS.  The back of the piece is engraved with a series of hallmarks… “Michael B., © 96, plat, 18K”.  Like a key for a map, these hallmarks reveal details about the pendant.  It was made in 1996, from both platinum and 18-karat gold by legendary modern designer Michael B.

Michael began honing his craft at the tender age of ten in Istanbul, Turkey.  By the age of sixteen, he came to California to pursue his dream.  Working primarily in bridal designs, Michael B. went on to win countless awards.  He became known for micro pavé setting, which is showcased to perfection in this pendant.  Although the brand lives on, Michael B. passed away in 2014.  This particularly fine example of his work is available for $2,150.00.  Who wouldn’t want to find this beauty under their Christmas tree?  ♥

Pick of the Week – Volume 64

Joden Girl

Baubles and Bling with Unbelievable Pricing

Selling  on the internet is challenging.  The most successful websites are both inviting and professional.  The photos are creative and fresh.  Noteworthy sellers incorporate social media posts that embrace the latest Instagram and Facebook trends like reels and videos.  Bloggers that flourish manage to be engaging, relevant yet not repetitive.  It’s a heck of a lot of work and can be frustrating.  However, when we get it right, it’s exhilarating!

Dana and I are constantly fine-tuning the website; we love to try new things and bounce ideas off of each other.  We research trends to see what jewelry is going to be hot this season.  You might even see the same piece of jewelry more than once.  If a particularly lovely bauble doesn’t sell the first time, we try again.  Sometimes, we even offer special pricing.

This week, we are re-introducing an old friend that has been on our site for a long time…  too long, to be honest.  It’s an ultra-feminine tassel pendant made entirely of platinum.  The arched top features a singular quatrefoil flower with a bezel set diamond center; two additional bezel set diamonds are situated to the left and right.  Three individual strands dangle from the curved top; the center one is a touch longer than the other two.

The floral motif continues with a series of six tulip-shaped links – there are two on each dangling strand.  Each tiny bloom is upside down and set with an Old European cut diamond.  Altogether, there are fourteen diamonds that have a total weight of .35 carat.  These sparklers have an average color grade of H-I and an average clarity grade of SI1-2.  A bright green pop of color is provided by a sculpted emerald bead.

Three natural baroque pearls cap the bottom of each tassel.  Measuring 1.75 inches from the top of the bail to the tip of the pearl, this pendant hangs from a 16-inch platinum cable-link chain.  Previously priced at $2,550.00 – this ethereal beauty is available now for just $1,500.00!  That’s a substantial savings on this vintage find.

If you’ve had your eye on this pendant, now’s the time.  I can promise that this is one Pick of the Week that won’t last long!

When Good Becomes Great

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling and Transformed Things

It’s no secret, I LOVE conversion jewelry.  You might even say I’m conversion-crazed!  Living in a throw-away society where each of us create almost 1600 pounds of trash per year, I love that we’re up-cycling and repurposing these broken or unworn pieces.

Some of my favorite transformations include:

  • Pins to pendants
  • Pins to Rings
  • Pins to Earrings
  • Stick Pins to Charms for Pendants and Charm Bracelets
  • Cufflinks to Earrings
  • Single Earrings to Pendants

There are endless options and countless reasons for re-imagining jewelry.  Perhaps you inherited a brooch that isn’t your jam.  Maybe you’ve been through a divorce and you want to do something with those rings.  It could be that your style has changed over the years and you have a piece that needs a refresh.  Whatever the case may be, don’t hesitate to take something old and create something new.

With the holidays on the horizon, the conversion case at Joden is brimming with all the latest revived treasures.  We redesign 99% of these beauties here on the premises – but occasionally we buy a piece of jewelry that was already updated, like this platinum pendant.

The transformation is so well done that at first glance, you might think this lovely gem was always a necklace.  It wasn’t until I turned it over that I was able to discern that it had once been something else entirely.  The center section on the back side is concave.  The gallery is perfectly contoured to lay flush with the finger…  this Art Deco pendant used to be a ring.  It isn’t often that someone takes a ring and changes it into something else.  This beauty is an unusual example.

The craftsmanship is superb, featuring hand pierced openings and milgrain edges.  Nestled in the center is an open-culet Old European Cut diamond.  There are an additional twenty-four diamonds set in the outer edges – they are all single-cut stones.  All diamonds have a combined weight of approximately .50 carat.

Although the original design sat like a square on the finger, I love that someone gave it a jaunty spin.  The pendant dangles from one corner and slides on an 18-inch platinum cable chain.  Priced at just $1,725.00, it’s available in the store.  I hope that you’ve enjoyed this conversion diversion as much as I have!
