Like Cake and Ice Cream

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling and Destined Things

Last week I introduced a dazzling pair of Edwardian cufflinks…  check them out.  Our Facebook Page is featuring a heated debate about those very cufflinks.  I’m asking all my readers this question “Should we keep them as they are, or should we convert them to earrings?”  Be sure to pop over there and cast your vote!

In my quest to find the perfect piece for this week’s Joden Girl, I stumbled across this beauty…

Handmade in classic Edwardian style from 14 karat yellow gold and platinum, this pendant is everything!  Made like a delicious layer cake, here’s how it stacks up.  A buttery yellow gold framework creates the cake base; it’s frosted with a cool sheet of platinum.  Nestled inside is the filling – a perfect oval of black onyx.  Next, the platinum is interspersed with 107 rose cut diamonds, providing an element of sparkle, and finally, a light sprinkling of 13 natural pearls.  Priced at $7,650, and worth every penny.

Look at how perfectly it pairs with the cufflinks!  If that pendant is the cake, then surely these cufflinks are the ice cream!  You can’t have one without the other.

Don’t forget to vote on the Facebook debate (Cufflinks or Earrings?) and stay tuned to see how it all shakes out.

Joe’s Special Box – Volume 11

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling, and A Collector’s Things

When I found this delicate beauty in Joe’s Special Box, I loved it immediately.   Then I saw the price – $1380.00.  While it certainly isn’t the most expensive ring we have, still – I was a bit surprised.  It’s lovely and positively screams quality, however, it seemed a bit high for such a little thing.  I asked Joe about it, and his response was simple…  “Because it’s absolutely beautiful.”

Anyone can see that he’s right.  The ring sits perfectly on the finger with a navette-shaped onyx center accented by three natural pearls and fourteen rose cut diamonds.  I didn’t realize how special the ring was until we started to really study it.  With his loupe in hand, Joe described how the shank of the ring was made – only then did I understand the true beauty of the piece.

The main structure of this ring was painstakingly handcrafted from a singular piece of rosy 18 karat gold.  To form the triple-split shank, the artisan carefully drilled holes into the design, then used a fine jeweler’s saw to remove excess metal.  The photos above show just how precise the handiwork is.  Then an extremely time-consuming process called trumming began.  Strips of cloth that were coated in polishing compound were threaded into the sawn surfaces of the ring – these strips were moved back and forth, time after time until the gold was smooth and polished.  This technique would have taken countless hours.  Suddenly, $1380 seemed like a bargain.  Go to our site and look, surely you’ll agree.

Joe’s Special Box – Volume 7

Joden Girl

Baubles, Bling, and A Collector’s Things

The Rule of Three…  it’s a concept that states that things that come in threes are more satisfying, more effective, just more.  This triad of rings is no exception.  When I was digging through “Joe’s Special Box” this week, I found the first two Georgian rings.  I really liked the duo – but when I added in the third ring, it just felt complete.  I was definitely more satisfied.

The Georgian period lasted from 1714-1830, well over two hundred years ago.  Pieces from this period are rare; Georgian rings in this condition are nearly non-existent.  At Joden, we have a handful – these three are my personal favorites.

I love the subtle details that make these rings uniquely Georgian…  from the closed-back construction of the pearl ring to the primitive rose cut diamonds set in c-shaped cups – I am in awe.  Each ring features delicate silver trim (Regency period jewelry is known for it!) that has aged to perfection – the patina is absolutely divine.

Ranging in price from $1,150 – $2,700, this trio is not to be missed.  “Omne Trium Perfectum!”
